It's not enough to call teachers 'heroes'

It’s not enough to call our educators “heroes.” Elected leaders must back up their rhetoric with action, and on that accord, our current congressman has failed miserably. I’m grateful to have the endorsement of the Indiana State Teachers Association. I’m a product of Indiana’s public schools, and a former high school teacher in the same system I was educated in.

Trey Hollingsworth is a Threat to Seniors

The facts could not be more clear: Trey Hollingsworth is a threat to seniors. During his 4 years in Washington, the 37-year old Congressman has repeatedly prioritized the interests of his corporate donors and wealthy friends over the people of this district, none more so than our seniors citizens.

September 11th Message

On 9/11 we learned that we cannot despair because America always rebuilds. In the darkest of times, Americans always come together. No one is ever lost if they are not forgotten.

What is a 'Hoosier Progressive?'

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I’m a progressive with Hoosier values.

What does that mean? Well, my approach to the economy is designed for ordinary, working-class people. I believe in fighting inequality.

Trey Hollingsworth, a multi-millionaire from a billionaire family, has never thought about what it’s like to be a part of the shrinking middle class in his life.

Why We Are Endorsing Labor (Not the Other Way Around)

Instead of asking unions to endorse us and touting their support this election cycle, it’s we, the candidates, who should be endorsing Indiana’s unions. I am a working-class guy with a boss and a day job. Every time establishment politicians like Nancy Pelosi or Mitch McConnell sell out to moneyed corporate interests, I struggle just like (almost) everyone else.

Feel Good Friday / Hoosier Music

Turn off the news and turn up the tunes! We Hoosiers have a lot more in common than our current leaders would like us to believe. If you agree, I’d like to share a bit more of my love of music and some songs I wrote that grew from my Indiana roots.

unCONVENTIONal

Tonight is the first night of the Republican National Convention. I am not really a “convention” sort of guy — for either party. Sure, I’m running as a Democrat, but my beliefs and positions are my own, that of a Hoosier, someone who is your friend and neighbor. And neither Donald Trump nor Nancy Pelosi are going to tell me what Hoosiers need…

Hoosier Honky-Tonk

Music can be an agent for change, a persuasive art, reminding the ordinary, working class Americans who are the backbone of our country, that we deserve better than what the CEO class thinks is good enough for us. That’s why I’ve written a song about my opponent, Trey Hollingsworth, born extraordinarily wealthy, he’s one of the richest members of Congress.

Wall Street Tells Hoosiers “Go Jump in a Lake”

Even as we attain this greater solidarity in our politics, America grows ever wider apart in its economics. I’m talking about the stock market. You might not have noticed, but even as many great speeches were being given on Tuesday, the NASDAQ was hitting an all-time high. When I heard that news, I thought: Wow! That’s bonkers!

Smash Your TV, Vote for Andy Ruff

I am asking Hoosiers to cut the cord and tune out cable news. As much as we may love watching Rachel Maddow – or even Sean Hannity – cable news hosts don’t have the best interest of Hoosiers at heart. MSNBC and Fox News, along with most other mainstream “news” sources are great for delivering eyeballs to advertisers, but they’re terrible for delivering the real information we as citizens need to help move our country forward.

Hoosier Progressiveness

Let there be no question: I’m a proud progressive. My 20 years as a city councilman defined me as an outspoken leader on progressive policy. I see big, structural problems through the lens of small town rural Indiana as well as that of our growing suburbs and urban centers. Plain and simple, I’m able to connect with Hoosiers all across the district.

A *Real* Hoosier Candidate

I know that it’s been maddening and demoralizing to watch Trey Hollingsworth’s money buy out the district. But I’ll tell you, although we may disagree on a point or three with our 9th district neighbors, there is a theme that runs through every conversation -- our common bond as Hoosiers who care about other ordinary Hooisers. It's the one thing Tennessee Trey and his father can't buy.

The Math: Can We Flip the 9th District?

We believe the mainstream narrative about Indiana's Ninth District is wrong. Their story is that this district can't be flipped because of a Republican gerrymander. That may have been somewhat accurate a decade ago. But the political weather is changing, and more importantly, so is our district changing - and rapidly.

Winning Over Republicans

Our commitment to Hoosier Republicans is real. They are not “deplorables”. They are our uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters, friends and co-workers. They aren’t exactly happy with what the Republican Party has become, but they have a hard time looking at the Democratic Party and seeing themselves reflected in it.
