What’s a Hoosier? (HINT: Not Trey Hollingsworth)
Let's talk about the governing principle upon which our country was founded: representational democracy. The idea that politicians should serve the people they were elected to represent is one many of us hold dear. Unfortunately, thanks to Supreme Court rulings like Citizens United and hyper-partisan gerrymandering (to name just a few factors), our system has been corrupted by wealthy individuals like Trey Hollingsworth, who was able to literally buy our open congressional seat four years ago and has been personally profiting ever since.
As a Southern Indiana boy who's spent a lifetime calling the good people of IN09 my friends and neighbors, I find it appalling that the 7th richest man in Congress, someone who was handed a real estate empire by his dad straight out of college, pretends to represent the hard-working folks of our district. Just as audacious, he calls himself a Hoosier! Please.
“Tennessee Trey” Hollingsworth has not put in the effort required to wear that title. Our congressman can’t even name a single song written by John Mellencamp, a living rock legend born and raised in Indiana's 9th District. Show me a Hoosier who can’t name "Jack and Diane" or "Small Town" in less than three seconds, and I’ll show you a politician from Tennessee who spends all his time in Washington.
Since we’re on the topics of heartland music and representational democracy, two of my favorite subjects, I wanted to share a song I felt compelled to write regarding Trey Hollingsworth's representation of IN09 and where I'd like you to help send him on November 3.
This campaign is not beholden to corporate donors or Democratic insiders. We don't rely on out-of-state consultants. It is a campaign quite literally powered by the people of IN09. And that means we need you to help us spread our message. So Forward, Like and Retweet this song. Let's make sure Trey Hollingsworth hears it in his ivory tower out in Washington.
