The Math: Can We Flip the 9th District?

We believe the mainstream narrative about Indiana's Ninth District is wrong.

Their story is that this district can't be flipped because of a Republican gerrymander. That may have been somewhat accurate a decade ago. But the political weather is changing, and more importantly, so is our district changing - and rapidly.

There are two critical and verifiable national trends at play here that can help our campaign to victory. One is the exodus of suburban voters from the Republican party; the other is the anger and frustration of young people and progressives. Those factors will likely tell the story of the 2020 election.

It so happens that our mostly rural district is sandwiched between the ever-expanding suburbs of Johnson County and the growing metro area down in Floyd and Clark Counties. And smack in the middle sits Monroe County, home to the state’s most populous college town, and the place where I was raised and served 20 years on the City Council.

With Donald Trump's poll numbers the lowest they've been in Indiana since his election, and with my opponent, Trey Hollingsworth, having attached himself to the president's failed approach to the coronavirus pandemic—not to mention callously declaring death from COVID-19 the "lesser of two evils"—we believe targeted work on specific demographics within our four most populous counties, along with our outreach to Independents and moderate Republicans in the rest of the district, will put us in a position to flip the mainstream narrative on its head.

All we need is a little help from you.
